Care of the Animals

Animals and our pets are such an important part of our lives.  In our culture they are a part of our families. We as humans are responsible for their well-being. They are extremely intelligent and very intuitive. Therefore, they are sensitive to changes in the weather and emotional atmospheres.

Our weather patterns are demonstrating dynamic extremes of heat, winds, and flooding. Fear and anxiety have been touching many lives. Pets can experience fear and anxiety due to the sudden change in environment and separation from their owners. The animals might exhibit changes in behavior, such as aggression, withdrawal, or excessive barking/meowing.

We have weather examples that instill fear, but also a separation/divorce or a death in a family. Emotions are running high, and many changes in the environment tend to occur. In these situations, we can demand that the animal/pet be the emotional glue that is holding one together and know that the animal perhaps is grieving also.

Grief is emotional pain, and it is Universal. All animals grieve and many times need their space to work with the new environment without the person who has departed.

Let us help our animals and pets by creating a safe space:

  • Set up a quiet, comfortable area where your pet can feel secure.
  • Re-establish Routine:   Pets thrive on routine, so try to get back to their regular feeding, walking, and play schedules as soon as possible.
  • Be Patient:  Understand that your pet may need time to readjust.  Offer plenty of love and reassurance.
  • Monitor Behavior:  Keep an eye on any changes in behavior and consult a vet if you notice anything concerning.

It is important to acknowledge the strong bond between you and your pet and take steps to support both of you during and after such stressful events.
